Big in 2013

I'd like to start off by saying Happy New Year to all. Aren't you glad 2012 is behind us? I sure am. 2013 plans to be a big year for film with several famed Hollywood directors releasing blockbusters including The Great Gatsby which is directed by Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet director, Baz Luhrmann.
In general 2013 will be a big year for pop culture with babies on the way and new music albums as well.
Music

Mother Monster will release her third album this year, Art Pop. Luckily for us she released various preliminary album artwork during 2012 just to give us a taste of what to expect.

One rumour that has surfaced is that Lady Gaga will be releasing a song called Ratchet which will feature; Beyonce, Azealia Banks and Rihanna. If this is true, us pop fans need to brace ourselves for a diva pop overload.

If you aren't a little monster then you most probably worship Queen Bey.
The R&B and at times pop singer is releasing a new album this year. The name of the singer's fifth solo album hasn't been released yet but I'm sure it will be very popular with Beyoncé fans all over the globe.

In February another Ratchet collaborator will release an album. Last year she gained fame and success with the release of her mixtape, Fantasea. Her 2013 album is called Broke with Expensive Taste and it will be a favourite amongst all cool girls around the globe.

Rihanna fans don't worry, she'll probably release another album towards the end of the year like she has been doing for the past seven years. In the meantime you can listen to her seventh album Unapologetic. I love the album, it was a lot better than Talk That Talk.

Rihanna's ex (or current) boyfriend Chris Brown is also releasing another album but we'll probably forget about the songs he releases two weeks after.

In terms of new music it seems like it will be a very big year for female singers and musicians. Last year was quite male dominated with the likes of Frank Ocean, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 dominating the charts. 2013 is the year of diva.

Fashion

Black and white and the 60s are the inspiration for fashion this year. Don't forget stripes and larger than life prints.

Moschino's SS13 Collection depicts all the trends for 2013

These trends may not apply to South Africans because South Africa is two years behind when it comes to runway trends. So we will see clothes similar to this only being sold in stores in 2014 if we lucky. But don't wait for retail stores to photocopy these looks. Create a '60s look yourself.
It's easier to become a '60s queen with various accessories. Make a statement with a pair of '60s inspired sunglasses. Take a look at the Gucci SS13 show for inspiration.

To be part of the black and white movement, try find anything that is striped. This year's black and white trend works better with stripes not separates. Marc Jacobs can help you out with that.

Don't let go of your animal print just yet. Giraffes and cows seem to be the animals of choice this year in the fashion industry.

Film

As mentioned before, it's a big year for film this year. Could be an even bigger year for Leonardo di Caprio. The Inception actor has two movies coming out this year, one being the highly anticipated The Great Gatsby. He even stars in the Quentin Quentin Tarantino film, Django Unchained.

Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis just might be the film of the year. The film which is directed by Steven Spielberg is about the Abraham Lincoln, the American President. If you unsure about the film and whether you would like to watch it, all you have to do is see the trailer. After two minutes and twenty two seconds you'll be asking your friends to go watch it with you.

For the musical fans, like me, Les Misérables will be your favourite film of the year. Even if you don't like musicals, you can still go watch. The film which was adapted from a stage musical has an all star cast and is directed by The King's Speech director, Tom Hooper.

For those of you who like animation, Pixar is releasing Monsters University this year. I was ten years old when the Monster's Inc was released. I'm turning 22 this year. Pixar knows how to remind one about their age.

People

It is always a big year for actors and actresses who win Academy Awards for leading roles. If my predictions are correct, Daniel Day-Lewis will once again win the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in A Leading Role which will make him the best actor of the year.

Anne Hathaway will also have a big year. The Vogue cover girl is very popular with various fashion designers and with her role in Les Misérables being nominated for an Academy Award, she is well on her way to having a splendid 2013.

Another actress set to have another good year is Jennifer Lawrence. With an Academy Award nomination this year, it seems like the Hunger Games star will have another great year if not better than 2012.

The most famous baby of 2013 will be the first born of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.  I've done my calculations, it's a girl. So in a couple of months we will be introduced to a new Princess. As much as Kim Kardashian likes to think of herself as royalty, Kimye Jnr will not be as popular as the new Princess of Wales (I think that will be her title).
(Above: Image of how the Princess of Wales is predicted to look)

All the other singers and actors mentioned above will obviously have their fair share of fame this year, including Alicia Keys and Rita Ora who had some drama at the end of 2012 with Rob Kardashian. Hopefully that has been sorted.

Model Cara Delevingne also seems to have a promising year ahead. She is the face of DKNY this year and became a Victoria Secret Angel last year.

Another model set to make waves even bigger than Delevigne is Yumi Lambert. The half Japanese half Belgian model appears in the Chanel SS13 Fashion Ad Campaign which means instant fame.

Politics

Barack Obama is back this year to start his second term. The leader of the land of the free has a tough year ahead of him. Will he finally implement stricter gun laws?

President Barack Obama

Cyril Ramaphosa, the newly elected ANC vice president will have to prove himself this year. Not only will he have to prove himself as vice president but he will also have to explain Marikana and his 18 million rand buffalo.

(Left: Cyril Ramaphosa)

Obviously Jacob Zuma will be in the news this year, along with his former best friend Julius Malema.

This year Malema will face court as his trial resumes again in April. Seems like we in for another dramatic and possibly entertaining year in South Africa. Helen Zille and Debra Patta will be there to help us scrutinise and criticise along the way.

Sport

African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) takes place this year in South Africa. Who is ready to see Bafana Bafana lose a few matches, draw even less and later admit to match fixing? I'm not. Either way, the games should be exciting. Go out and buy tickets and support your country.

The UEFA Women's EURO will also be held this year. Don't forget to support women. Yes it won't be as big as EURO 2012 but that doesn't mean you can't let your friends and family know about it.

Even though I have tried to predict the future with this blog post, nothing is certain. I hope you all have a stress-free and drama-free 2013. The blog might undergo a few changes in terms of content but you'll learn about that during the year.

Have a GREAT year!
